Summer Camps

Clay Camps in the Warehouse District

Located in a beautiful 100+ year old warehouse in Peoria's Warehouse District.

Campers will learn the basics, and work on developing skills of making pottery using both hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques.  Each camp has a different focus of forms created.  We also play games and have time set aside for hanging out/playing with other campers.

Campers will take hikes through the Peoria Warehouse District. They will learn about the relevance of these buildings to Peoria's history and the historic significance of Peoria, itself.

Students will create up to 8 pieces which stay at the studio, have finish work, glazing and firing done to them, and are picked up at a later date.  Functional forms created will be food-safe, dishwasher-safe, microwave safe.

Campers need to bring a lunch every day except for Friday (we do a pizza party).

Clay Camps at the Farm

Located on a 100+ year old family farm near Limestone High School, outside of Bartonville, IL.

Campers will learn what clay is, where it comes from, how it becomes a finished ceramic product, its profound effect on civilization and historic ties to farming, food production, and storage.   They will dig clay from the ground then learn how to process and use it to create sculptural forms and functional pottery.

Campers will experience working in clay through hand-building and wheel-throwing (spinning clay) techniques.  Each student will create up to 8 pieces which will stay at the farm, have finish work, glazing and firing done, and will be picked up at a later date.

Campers will go on hikes around the farm and learn about the prairie and traditional farming in Central Illinois (livestock and crops).

Campers will also play games and have time set aside for hanging out/playing with other campers.

Campers need to bring lunch every day except for Friday.  On Friday, we will have a campfire to demonstrate how pottery was originally fired.  We will also have a separate fire to cook hot dogs and marshmallows.
